1999 was the year I reclaimed my body. Like so many people, I had a layer of body fat around my middle, on my hips, with pockets of fat and cellulite on other parts of my body. I was not grossly overweight. At 5 feet, 2 inches, and 139 lbs, I actually looked better than many of my peers. But I felt the extra fat and I was tired of hauling it around!
I also wanted to increase my strength, which means I wanted to build muscle. I wanted definition, so that when I look at my arms, I see triceps and biceps standing out from the smoothness of my skin.
I have tried diets and know they do not work. I've tried resistance machines only, which briefly increased my strength, but did not build muscle in a uniform way. What I needed was a tried-and-true food plan that lets me eat enough to feel satisfied, using foods that work with my body toward my goals.
I also needed an exercise plan that I could follow that has worked for other people. I know from experience that the best approach to conquering life's challenges is to find someone who has overcome the obstacle, and do what they did. By following someone else's plan of action, I could duplicate their results.
I thought I had found it with the "Body for Life" program designed by Bill Phillips of EAS. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed with the results in terms of fat loss. I lost more weight by accident in the past than I did on that program, and I followed it very closely. Read my weekly journal, kept during the 12 week program. I did gain muscle and there were other personal benefits from completing the commitment.
So, beginning October 18, 1999, I went on a food plan of my own creation, that consists of low fat foods, with plenty of "grazing" material that is low or no fat (vegetables, fruits) and cutting back on carbohydrates. Juicing is a staple of my diet. I also cut out meat.
My exercise program consists martial arts class three times a week, and daily practice at home. I began Hwar do in August 1999. Hwar Do is a combination of the best of several martial arts disciplines. As of January 2000, I have lost inches and tightened up my muscles. My body feels leaner and stronger to the touch. There is a metamorphosis going on that I really like. As I become more fit, I become more flexible.
The most important lesson on my quest? Keep trying until you find what works for you!
