Doublewoman

Doublewoman

Doublewoman is an achetypal figure that appears in several different cultures. She is often depicted as a goddess who embodies the full spectrum of the many ways there are to be female. She represents the love of one woman for another. She brings together the energies inherent within women's relationships, entwining them to create a single strong entity. Doublewoman is capable of great love, loyalty, honesty, and tenderness. She is also fierce, proud, frightening, and defiant. She radiates the power of female sexuality, and reflects none of the restraints imposed on human women throughout the ages. She bestows the love of women on each of us in different measure, and at different times.

What does the love of woman mean to me? I wrote the following poem in 1998, when the idea came to consciousness that I should question the cultural myth that opposite genders were the only "right" way to love.

"As subtle as the turning of a page,
slowly, quietly, my life turned toward you.
One moment I was familiar and the next I had changed.

Who is this woman in my body,
who sits thinking, feeling,
whispering your name?

Awed and frightened I ask myself,
how much life do you want to live?
And how much are you willing to let walk on by?"
